In 2006, people around the world used their cellular phones to send 158 billion text messages, representing a 95% increase when compared with 2005. 6.6 billion is the population of the earth.

After the events at Virginia Tech, colleges around the country are consdiring a new alert system that would enable thousands of students to sign up for an alert text messaging service.
Since so few students use dorm or home phones, this would be the most efficient way to reach them in the case of an emergency.
